Hel.LAS is a pro bono clinic, which was created to address the legal needs of low-income members of the Greek community in the Chicago area. This clinic meets on a monthly basis (typically the second Saturday of every month) to provide Greek Americans in the Chicago area with access to legal information, referrals and potential representation in a linguistically and culturally sensitive environment. To date, we have provided advice and counsel in domestic relations, immigration, contract review, wills, power of attorneys, landlord-tenant issues, and bankruptcy matters. In the short time since Hel.LAS has opened its doors, it has been able to provide counsel and service to at least 35 individuals.
Hel.LAS is promoted and served by the Hellenic Bar Association (HBA), and housed at the Hellenic Foundation offices located at 6251 W Touhy Ave in Chicago. The Hellenic Foundation provides the essential logistical support needed to initially communicate with and identify potential clients and generally help the clinic run smoothly. Hel.LAS is recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization, by the IRS as of August 2016.
Hel.LAS owes much of its success to its wonderful volunteer attorneys, who offer their time and provide services to those seeking help. Hel.LAS is made up of approximately 30 volunteer attorneys, who are enthusiastic and eager to help their community. When potential clients make appointments with Hel.LAS, the Hel.LAS Board of Directors work diligently to connect a client with a volunteer attorney. From the volunteer attorney’s perspective, Hel.LAS offers Greek attorneys the ability to give back to a community that has given us so much, and to use their professional skills to help the less fortunate. Additionally, Hel.LAS volunteer attorneys are offered seminars and Continuing Legal Education opportunities, to expand their knowledge in various practice areas.
