Random Acts of FLowers Chicago

Random Acts of Flowers is so thankful for the Hellenic Foundations generous grant. With it, Random Acts of Flowers will provide three deliveries of flowers to the 110 residents of Greek American Rehabilitation Care Center in 2017 and 2018, as well as floral arrangements to the 200 residents at the Hollywood House, another recipient of a Hellenic Foundation grant.

Further, RAF will bring fresh cut flowers to both Hollywood House and the Greek American Rehabilitation Care Center to be arranged by the residents of the facility, as well as amaryllis bulb kits which the residents will plant and care for. Many studies report the benefits of horticultural therapy for individuals going through both physical and mental health related issues. The sense of accomplishment and responsibility given to residents with floral arranging and/or plants are irreplaceable. Working with plants can offer confidence-building skills, as well as encourage socialization and task initiation.

In addition to the floral arranging activities and deliveries, Random Acts of Flowers delivered 160 poinsettia plants to the Hellenic Foundation’s Community Care Program's in-home care clients for the holidays. Finally, RAF will be partnering with the Guardian Angel Greek Orthodox Day School to offer a variety of volunteer opportunities to students from kindergarten through sixth grade.

Random Acts of Flowers Chicago is excited to be able to serve nearly 37,000 individuals with the Hellenic Foundations grant through these various deliveries and activities.

Random Acts of Flowers Chicago was established in 2015 and, in just three short years, has served more than 80,000 individuals in the healthcare community, with more than 400 active volunteers donating more than 30,000 hours of service and recycling more than 68,000 vases.

Random Acts of Flowers improves the emotional health and well-being of individuals in healthcare facilities by delivering recycled flowers, encouragements and personal moments of kindness.

In July 2007, Random Acts of Flowers’ founder, Larsen Jay, was in a near-fatal accident. He credits the outpouring of support he received in the form of daily visitors and dozens of floral arrangements while in the hospital as a key to providing the emotional lift and encouragement that helped him persevere through the multiple surgeries and challenging recovery process he faced. When Larsen was capable of leaving his room, he noticed how many of his fellow patients did not have visitors or flowers – the very thing that helped him so much in those early and difficult days. The first “Random Act of Flowers” delivery was made moments later as Larsen repurposed his flowers and delivered them from his wheelchair.
