On the Feast Day of the Chapel of the Life-Giving Font at the St. Iakovos Retreat Center, people from all over the Metropolis of Chicago gathered to celebrate the Divine Liturgy. Following the church service, attendees witnessed the Official Ribbon Cutting of the sports fields made possible by the Hellenic Foundation Grant Program.
Once all were gathered in the Tomaras Lodge, His Eminence Metropolitan Nathanael honored Hellenic Foundation Board Member Bill J. Vranas for his steadfast dedication to the St. Iakovos Retreat Center with an icon of St. Iakovos and a Plaque of Appreciation and Gratitude. As a Founding Board Member, Mr. Vranas played an integral role in acquiring the location and developing the concept of the Retreat Center. He devoted over 15 years of time, talent, and treasures as a Founding Member, President, and Treasurer of the Board of Directors.
In addition, His Eminence bestowed the Bronze Cross upon Hellenic Foundation Board Member Ernest C. Karras, who also serves on the Board of Directors of the St. Iakovos Retreat Center, and upon the Hellenic Foundation Executive Director, Peter E. Valessares. The Bronze Cross of the Metropolis of Chicago is one of the highest honors bestowed upon a layperson meant to recognize their service and commitment to the community. Afterward, all attendees enjoyed fellowship and a Paschal meal in the dining hall of the Tomaras Lodge.
